In the 1920s & 30s boards were made from Redwood planks and could weigh in excess of 100 lbs.
By the 1950s Balsa and fiberglass boards proved lighter.
In the 1960s Polyurethane Foam and fiberglass took over as mainstay construction materials and Jan & Dean, & the Beachboys brought surfing into our everyday consciousness.
In the 1970s Shortboards answered the desire for ever more responsive boards, fins began to multiply and tails began to squash.
