When Maresias is big it's heavy. The beach is fairly steep in sections so there's a shore-pound and it sets up often as an inside/ outside break. Channels form so if you time it right paddling out can be fairly easy. When a good clean wave sets up it can throw stand up barrels and form pretty sweet sections. It's a really a very different wave from home taking some time and determination to master or not...
There were some big sets and lots of close outs the first couple of days we were there. The crew surfed all day, diggin' surfing in boardshorts and working out getting used to the conditions. We were watching a swell approach on the internet weather pages and it looked like Saturday, the first day of the contest was going to be huge.
The pulse arrived early hitting Maresias Friday the 5th and it tapered after that through the week. By the end of our stay we were all getting comfortable in the water and our surfing really showed it.
These are shots of the Canadian crew freesurfing throughout our stay and a couple of locals out on "Big Friday"... enjoy
