Ultimate Soft Top Comp at Cox Bay on International Surf Day, Jun/21/2006 - Photos & write-up by Stephen Mayor
The Vancouver Island West Coast Chapter of Surfrider Foundation held it's first ever Ultimate Soft Top "Get Radical" Competition at Cox Bay on International Surf Day, the first day of summer 2006. Conditions were typical summer... sunny, 2 to 4 foot with on shore winds. Regardless 25 would be radical surfers paid $15.00 each, the entire amount earmarked for local Surfrider projects, to show their stuff on 9' soft top surfboards.
Five preliminary heats of five channeled 10 riders into 2 semifinal heats. Four surfers deemed with the most radical moves, Tia Holmes, Alex McWilliam, Steph Wightman and Mike Stewart qualified for the final. Tai Holmes got the crowd goin' with 2 headstands on one wave, Alex did the same with his nose riding moves and Mike with his 360 boardwalk but the crowning glory went to Steph Wightman who pulled off a truely sweet floater in the last minutes of the heat. A special award was given to junior surfer CC "Machine" Unger-Mayor for most waves ridden in a single heat and Kiyo Oye for Funkiest Hat worn during a heat.
The whole event ran smoothly under the guidance of Surfriders local Board of Directors, Krissy Montgomery on the mike, Ron Weeks beach marshalling, Zoe on BBQ detail (grillin' top notch burgers and dogs) and others, as well as volunteers all contributing to the events success. Surfrider received a cash donation from Jenny Stewart of Surf Sister Surf School, $1.00 from each lesson they gave in 2005. There were also loads of draw prizes donated by local businesses. This was a truly a great way to celebrate International Surfing Day and to kick off the summer of 2006.
